Good Afternoon, Students and DCPS Families,
The OPENGATE Weapon Detection Devices will be installed and operational at each of our Ridgeview schools on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.
We ask you and our students to be aware that the following items will cause the weapon detection device to be set off which will result in book bags and personal belongings to be searched: Please see the attached slide. Students will be given instructions at school as to how to walk through OPENGATE device if these items are stored in bookbags or personal belongings.
The items are:
Chromebooks
Three-Ring Binders
Umbrellas
Cases for Sunglasses
Binoculars
Can goods
Medical devices, such as listed in the attached slide below, will not set off the detection device. Insulin pumps, devices associated with insulin and insulin medications will not set the detection device off.
Thank you again for your help and consideration as these devices are installed in each of our schools to help make our schools safer for students and staff.
Again, the OPENGATE Weapon Detection Devices will be operational at each of our Ridgeview schools on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.
Kindest regards,
Haydee L.Robinson

Dear DCPS Students and Families,
Please see the attached letter regarding the installation of OPENGATE. This new weapons detection system will replace Dickenson County Public Schools' current temperature/metal detectors. Because of its high detection efficiency and accuracy, we hope it will require fewer searches of bookbags and students' personal belongings and speed up the process of students entering the building with fewer staff on duty.
The staff training and installation for OPENGATE is on Monday, January 27, 2025, with Tuesday, January 28, 2025 (or the first day of in-person instruction) for implementation.
Thank you,
Haydee L.Robinson
