Subject: Important: Upcoming Radon Testing at Ridgeview Elementary

The health and safety of our students and staff are our top priorities.  As part of our commitment to maintaining a healthy learning environment, we will be conducting radon testing in the school building.

What is radon?
Radon is a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless, and tasteless radioactive gas found in soil and rocks beneath buildings that can seep from the ground.  While exposure to radon in the environment poses little risk, the accumulation of radon gas in an enclosed space, such as a school or home, could pose serious health risks over time.  Testing is the only way to know if radon is present at elevated levels.

Please note that the testing process will be conducted during normal School operations and is non-intrusive.  There are no risks or hazards to students, staff, or anyone else in the building during the test administration.

What to expect during the testing period:

  • Testing duration: The test will last at least 48 hours, starting on November 17th, 2025, and concluding on Thursday, November 20th, 2025, into early December.

  • No disturbance: Radon detectors contain no hazardous or toxic materials, but for the best results, do not touch or move the testing equipment during this period.  Please avoid touching or relocating the detectors.

  • Keep doors closed: For accurate results, please keep windows closed and doors closed except for regular entry and exit.

  • No outside air devices: Please do not use fans or other devices that draw air from outdoors during the testing period.

  • Every classroom, office, and other commonly used rooms that touch the ground, crawl space, or basement will be tested. Storage rooms, locker rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms will not be included in the testing.

What happens after the test?

Once testing is finished, the devices will be sent to a lab for analysis.  We will receive the results and send out an update notice with the findings and any next steps.  The results will also be posted on the school website.

We thank you for your cooperation in helping ensure the success of this vital health and safety measure.

Sincerely,

Haydee L. Robinson
